Some details of the tour :D

This is one of our most popular Halfday Jeep Safari tours. During the half-day jeep tour to Cabo Girao, we will visit the coastal region and hidden villages in the mountains of Câmara de Lobos, starting our ride on its picturesque fishing village located west of Funchal

In our UMM, we will enter the rugged mountains and valleys of Câmara de Lobos, passing through the wine region of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, whose Tinta Negra Madeira wine vineyards let us admire the terraced culture system seen and used all over the island. Crossing the fragrant forest of Mimosa and Eucalyptus, we will see the ” Valley of the Nuns ” – Curral das Freiras, from one of the best viewpoints just before we cross all the cherry and chestnut plantations, towards Jardim da Serra.

Of course, this trip would not be complete without a stop in a very local place for a drink, with a Home made Madeira wine or a Poncha (optional) to have the courage to walk on the glass platform of Cabo Girão, the highest Madeira cliff, a real test of your vertigo, and an incredible photo opportunity, but just after a bit more driving Off Road 🙂

Our itinerary - Here are some of the Highlights of our Jeep Tour to Cabo Girao circuit, others can appear on the day, we will not spoil the surprise..shiuuu

Câmara de Lobos Fishing Village

Câmara de Lobos is a city that also names the municipality and the parish where we will spend the morning! located on the south coast of Madeira Island. This land of fishermen, whose main speciality is fishing with a black scabbard fish, and owes its fame to fishermen who paint the bay with their picturesque and very characteristic little boats – the Xavelhas. We will see here Câmara de Lobos city from a top viewpoint, overlooking the sea and offering a magnificent view of the city, the sea and its surroundings, including Cabo Girão.

Estreito de Câmara de Lobos

On the way to the summit of Câmara de Lobos, we will cross Estreito de Camara de Lobos, at an altitude of about 460 meters, sheltering about 88% of all the grapes produced for Madeira wine in the region of Cãmara de Lobos. 62% of all the grapes produced on the island for his most famous Madeira wine! Talking about Madeira wine is a mandatory reference to the parish of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos. Its link with wine production is so important that the locality changes colour twice a year when vast areas of vineyards have green or purple leaves.

Nuns Valley - Curral das Freiras

Curral das Freiras enjoys a unique location on the island of Madeira, in a deep valley resembling the crater of a volcano. Curral das Freiras is one of the few places on the island that is not visible from the sea. It is, therefore, more protected and difficult to reach. Even today, there is only one car accessible along a winding road from Funchal,so we will not go down into the valley, and will see it from a point of view situated to the west, facing the east side of the mountain, where the most tourists see it, on this side, not only we also have an excellent view of the parish of Curral das Freiras but also and all the mountains and peaks that surround it.

Jardim da Serra

Jardim da Serra means in Portuguese something like the “garden in the mountains”. This region is also known to be a fertile land in cherries. It is the region of the island where this red fruit grows more abundantly, and which is why it is very present in its local economy. It is at Jardim da Serra that we will have our opportunity to have a refreshment, a local drink of a Poncha freshly prepared at home, or even Madeira wine, or even the liqueur made of its beautiful Cherries (optional) in a very local place!

The Cliff of Cabo Girão

Yes, we will end up with “cherry on the top of the cake”, Cabo Girão, the highest promontory on the seafront in Europe and the second highest in the world, at 580 meters above sea level. From Cabo Girão’s point of view, we have an extraordinary panoramic view of Câmara de Lobos at Funchal Bay, with the blue of the sea as a landscape. At the bottom of Cabo Girão, there are fajãs with farmland. At 580 m above sea level, we can now walk on a glass floor, because the viewpoint has recently been rehabilitated, after having been built a platform suspended in glass, called skywalk.
