Up to Pico do Areeiro before dawn, so that we can watch the sunrise, and all colors, ranging from deep blues and purples to fiery oranges and reds.
The view from the top of Pico do Areeiro is breathtaking, so once we get our breathe again we will then go and hike on a small strech of Levada dos balcões about 2km (30 min. optional) and go for a cofee to really wake up before heading back leaving you a fullday still to explore!
As you make your way up to Pico do Areeiro before dawn, the air will be crisp and the darkness will add to the anticipation of what’s to come. As the sun begins to rise, the sky will slowly transform into a vivid canvas of colors, ranging from deep blues and purples to fiery oranges and reds.
As the first rays of sunlight start the distant valleys and the coastline will start to slowly emerge from the shadows. The clouds that were once blanketing the landscape will also begin to take on a new life, as they change colors from a dark gray to a warm pink and orange.
As the sun continues to rise, the surrounding landscape will become increasingly illuminated, casting a warm and golden glow over the mountains, hills, and valleys. Pico do Areeiro is a mountain peak located in Madeira, Portugal. It is one of the highest peaks on the island at 1818 meters, as the highest is Pico Ruivo and second highest pico das torres, Pico do Areeiro is the only one we can reach by car, and experiencing the sunrise from there can be an awe-inspiring experience.
Ribeiro Frio is a place in the north interior of the island of Madeira. It is located in the parish of São Roque do Faial, in the municipality of Santana, between Porto da Cruz, in the municipality of Machico, about 15 kilometers from Funchal.
It is a starting point for pedestrian walks along the levadas of Furado PR10 and A vereda dos Balcões PR11 which leads to the viewpoint of Balcões
The Vereda dos Balcões is a small trail, about 2 km long, that takes you to enjoy the views from the Miradouro dos Balcões. Starting at Ribeiro Frio, this trail of easy difficulty, and expected duration of 30 minutes, accompanies the Levada of Serra do Faial.
On the way through Vereda dos Balcões you will have the opportunity to come across the indigenous and endemic species of Madeira, the Laurissilva.
At the end of Vereda dos Balcões, you will arrive at the Miradouro dos Balcões, where on days with good visibility you will have a glimpse of the central mountain range of the island, where Pico do Areeiro, Pico das Torres and Pico Ruivo stand out.
